What to Look for When Buying a Used Trailer
Published on Mar 03, 2025
Buying a used RV can be a smart way to get the RV lifestyle you want at a more budget-friendly price. But, like any major purchase, it’s important to know what to look for to ensure you’re making a good investment.
Whether you’re new to RVs or looking to upgrade, this guide will help you spot the key things to check before you sign on the dotted line.
Check for Signs of Water Damage
Water damage is one of the biggest concerns when buying a used trailer because it can lead to costly repairs down the road. Even a small leak can cause structural issues over time.
What to look for:
Stains or discoloration on the ceiling, walls, or around windows and vents
Soft spots on the floor—walk around and feel for areas that feel spongy or uneven
Bubbling or peeling wallpaper or warped paneling
Musty odors, which could indicate hidden mold or mildew
Don’t forget to inspect the roof, especially around seams, vents, and skylights. Water often sneaks in through these areas if the seals aren’t maintained.
Inspect the Exterior for Damage
The outside of the trailer can tell you a lot about how well it’s been cared for.
Things to check:
Cracks, dents, or fading on the siding, which could be signs of wear or minor accidents
Seals and caulking around windows, doors, and corners—look for cracks, gaps, or dried-out sealant
Tires: Check the tread depth and look for cracks on the sidewalls. Even if they look fine, tires older than 5-6 years may need replacing.
Underbelly: If possible, take a peek underneath. Look for rust, damage, or signs of water exposure.
Test All Appliances and Systems
You’ll want to make sure everything works as it should—because finding out the fridge doesn’t cool after your first camping trip is never fun.
Test the following:
Fridge and freezer: Turn them on to make sure they cool properly.
Stove and oven: Check that burners ignite and the oven heats evenly.
Furnace and A/C: Run both to ensure they’re functioning and responsive.
Water system: Test sinks, shower, toilet, and look under for leaks when the water pump is running.
Electrical outlets: Plug something small (like a phone charger) into each outlet to confirm power flow.
If the seller is hesitant to let you test these systems, consider it a red flag.
Examine the Roof and Seals
The roof often bears the brunt of weather damage, so it deserves special attention.
Look for:
Cracks, tears, or bubbling in the roofing material
Seals around vents, skylights, and AC units—dried or cracked seals may need resealing soon
Signs of pooling water or sagging, which could indicate structural issues
If the trailer has a ladder, climb up for a better view (safely, of course). If not, use a step ladder or ask for photos if you’re buying remotely.
Check for Frame and Structural Integrity
Beyond the cosmetic stuff, make sure the trailer’s “bones” are solid.
Doors and windows: Open and close smoothly without sticking—misalignment can signal frame issues.
Slide-outs: Extend and retract fully. Listen for unusual noises, and check the seals when extended.
Chassis and hitch: Look for signs of rust, cracks, or weld repairs. Surface rust is common, but deep corrosion can weaken the structure.
Review Maintenance Records (If Available)
A well-documented maintenance history is a good sign the trailer’s been properly cared for. Ask for records of:
Routine inspections
Sealant reapplications
Repairs or part replacements
Tire changes and brake servicing
While not every seller will have detailed records, it’s worth asking. If they can’t provide them, rely on your inspection even more.

Trust Your Gut
Sometimes, it’s not just about what you see—it’s how you feel. If something seems off or the seller seems evasive, take a step back. There are plenty of used trailers out there, and it’s better to be patient than rushed into a decision you’ll regret.
