Before you hit the open road in your RV, it's crucial to ensure everything is in tip-top shape for a smooth and enjoyable journey. Whether you're a seasoned road tripper or a first-time RV adventurer, having a checklist to guide your preparations is essential. This checklist will help you cover all the bases, from ensuring your RV is ready for the road to packing the essentials you'll need along the way. By following this simple guide, you'll be able to set off with peace of mind, knowing you've taken all the necessary steps to make your trip safe and fun.

Planning & Packing

  • Check your route ahead of time- note any bridge or tunnel restrictions.
  • Pack heavier items toward the front of your RV, in front of the axles.

Exterior & Safety Checks

  • Close all windows, vents, and awnings.
  • Retract slide-outs and ensure TV antennas or satellite dishes are stowed.
  • Disconnect and securely store your power cord and water hose.
  • Inspect and inflate tires (including spare) on both the trailer and tow vehicle to recommended PSI.
  • Verify all wheel lug nuts are tightened to the correct torque.
  • Confirm your RV battery is properly hooked up and fully charged.

Hitch & Tow Setup

  • Use the correct ball size for your trailer coupler.
  • Secure your ball mount hitch pin firmly.
  • Properly cross and attach safety chains.
  • Attach break-away cable to tow vehicle (not to safety chains or ball mount).
  • Securely attach and adjust the equalizer hitch.

Electrical & Brake Systems

  • Check running lights, brake lights, turn signals, and hazard lights.
  • Ensure trailer and tow vehicle brakes are working; adjust mirrors for clear visibility.

Final Preparations

  • Raise trailer jack, stabilizer jacks, and steps.
  • Store wheel chocks, jack stands, and equalizer snap-up lever securely for travel.
  • Double-check all interior items for secure storage.
  • Do a final visual inspection to ensure nothing’s forgotten and everything’s secure.
